There are essentially 3 generations of seat styles from 1966 to 1976: early (1966-1973), middle (1974) and late (1975-1976) styles. Each front seat style has a corresponding rear seat style. There were variations in the early style front seat kits because of the headrest. First, headrests were not added until 1969 and then the really early ones were half an inch smaller (very rare) than the ones released a few months later. There were also early style seats whose headrests were replaced with 1974 headrests. Also, the early front seats (66-68) had fixed backrests (limited recline) but some of those seats were modified for full recline and thus affecting the seat cover.

These front seat kits includes all the seat cover parts necessary to completely replace the original seat upholstery of both front seats. The headrest covers and back panel covers are included (if applicable). These seat kits can be manufactured using either BMW Vinyl or BMW Leather. The correct embossing will be done in the vinyl. 1974-1976 leather covers cannot be pressed with the correct embossing and will be made with no embossing.

Early style front seats (1966-1973) had variations in the headrest and the back panel even though the backrest and cushion covers remained the same. Headrests were not included until 1969 and some of the earliest 1600/1600-2s sedans had non-reclining backrests. Those seats had a different back panel than the rest of the early seats. Also there were early style seats we've found over the years that had the 5-pc headrest found in 1974 models.

The pre-sewn seat covers are designed for easy installation and will not require sewing of any kind. The seat kits do not include any other seat parts like seat pads, seat frame and other miscellaneous hardware. Those parts must be re-used, fixed or replaced during installation. The seat covers are designed to be installed on original seat parts and thus for best results, it may be necessary to fix or replace worn out or damaged seat parts especially the old seat pads that are almost guaranteed to have shrunk or damaged due to use and time.

These seat kits can easily be installed by an amateur restorer. But due to other factors, like removal of the old seat upholstery and possible replacement or re-padding of the old seat pads, we still highly recommend the use of professional installers. These kits are "made-to-order" meaning we do not keep them in stock and are placed in the production line only when an order is placed. Depending on how busy the production line is (varies seasonaly), it can take 4-6 weeks before these covers are shipped. Make sure to add shipping time when calculating the number of days it will take for the seat kit to reach you.

The seat structure did not significantly change until 1975 when the headrests switched from side posts to bottom posts. Thus they used the same seat pad from 1966 to 1974. The design was such that left side seat pads are different from the right side seat pads. The late model (1975-1976) left and right side seat pads, on the other hand, were completely identical. Each pad are sold separately.

The pads that we offer are OEM and come from Germany. Unfortunately there is no reproduction version of these pads at this time. You can buy them individually or save 10% by buying them as a set.
