Tools required:

  • Phillips and Slotted Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Marking Pencil or Chalk
  • Metric Socket Set
  • Blunt Stuffing Tool (i.e. Rounded Putty Knife)
  • Awl
  • Hammer
  • Spray Adhesive, 1 lb. (#9410)
  • or Brush Adhesive, 1 Quart (#9411)
  • Weatherseal Adhesive, Black (#9412)
  • Silicone Adhesive, Black (#9413)
  • Protective Blankets
  • Masking Tape
  • Pliers or Vice Grips
  • 1/2" Hole Punch

Additional parts not included that may be required:

  • Pair of Top Straps (#175-3056)
  • Top to Windshield Weatherseal (#175-5133)

General Preparations:

  1. Inspect contents of box against your invoice, especially color and material
  2. Protect car with fender covers or blankets to avoid damage to finish
  3. Tape protection over inside and outside of plastic window on new top

Pre-Installation Preparations:

  1. Inspect top frame for damage or deterioration
  2. Lubricate pivot points with non staining lubricant (WD40)
  3. Delay installation if all parts necessary are not at hand

Top Removal:

  1. Raise the convertible top and latch it into position. Mark the position of the bows on the old top and measure the distance between them.
  2. Unlatch the top from the windshield header and fold it back. Do not lower the top into the well.
  3. Remove the top to windshield rubber seal and release the top fabric from the channel in the header bow.
  4. Inspect the wood tack strip for damages. Replace it if necessary.
  5. Relatch the top frame to the windshield and fold back the top fabric. Note the location of the bows.
  6. Release the rear bar from the hooks on the rear deck. Fold the rear section onto the top deck.
  7. Remove the top fabric from the rear bar.
  8. Clean off any old adhesive from the rear bar and the header.
  9. Re-hook the rear bar to the hooks on the rear deck.
  10. Before installing the top it is critical that the bow height be checked and if necessary be reset. This is especially important on cars which may have had several replacement tops:
    1. Put the frame up with the the top locked into position.
    2. Measure the distance between the rear rail and the back bow. It should be 16 inches.
    3. This distance is controlled by the top straps. Adjust as necessary. Worn, frayed or discolored straps may be replaced with new stratps (# 175-3056)

Top Installation:

  1. Before beginning installation, inspect top frame for loose fasteners or bent bows.
  2. Header should be covered in cotton headliner fabric.
  3. If replacing the top straps(#175-3056), make sure the center deck is close to horizontal between the 1st and 2nd bow.
  4. Latch top frame to the windshield.
  5. Spread top fabric over the top frame with lower center rear seam on the corner of the rear bar.
  6. Check that rear bow aligns with seam across top fabric above rear window. (approx 16"
  7. If bows are all in the right position, (compare to old top) begin installation.
  8. Mark center line at front and rear of top fabric as well as  rear bar and header bar.
  9. Remove the rear bar from the rear hooks and lay it on the straps on the top deck.
  10. Beginning in the center of the rear bar, use contact adhesive to glue the top fabric to the bottom of the rear bar.
  11. Welt at bottom rear should follow the line of the top. Sealing roll will be slightly visable.
  12. Make sure the rear-most seam of the double seam on the top fabric is on the bottom rear edge of the bar.
  13. Do not glue to the inside of the rear bar at this time.
  14. Refit rear bar to rear hooks. Check for wrinkles, adjust as necessary.
  15. Pull top fabric forward tightly by hand across header bow and center.
  16. Chalk line to correspond to leading edge of  header bow on face of fabric.
  17. Unlatch top at front and fold back.
  18. Beginning in the center of the header, lightly staple the fabric to the tack strip with the chalk line 1/2"to 1" forward of the front edge.
  19. Relatch the top to the windshield, make sure the top is taut not tight and there are no wrinkles.
  20. Adjust as necessary by re-stapling.
  21. Do not final glue and staple to to header yet.
  22. Pull rear 1/4 panels down and forward to remove any wrinkles.
  23. Mark the 1/4 panels with the location of the 4 common sense fasteners on the body.
  24. Unlatch the top from the header and fold back to center.
  25. Release rear bar, cut holes and install 4 common sense escutcheons on rear 1/4 panels.
  26. Hook rear bar and side common sense fasteners then latch at header.
  27. Check for wrinkles and adjust as necessary.
  28. Use 2 #4 sheet metal screws and cup washers to attach top thru binding to the ends of the header bow.
  29. Using contact adhesive to glue top fabric to inside of rear bar. Trim if necessary.
  30. Using contact adhesive to glue top fabric to channel on header bow then staple.  Trim if necessary.
  31. Seal staples with silicone sealant or similar.
  32. Install header rubber seal #175-5133 using weatherstrip adhesive.
  33. Latch the top into position.
  34. Remove tools and protective coverings.
  35. Check for excess adhesive and clean off with solvent.

Elapsed Time: Approximately 4 hours
